TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

One of my greatest joys in life is being able to work with others and bring music into their lives. Whether a young child, a teenager, an adult, or a person who has come to music later in life, music is for everyone. My work in cello performance, community engagement, radio broadcasting, and arts advocacy has lead me to my life mission to democratize music.

I work with complete beginners, intermediate students, advanced students, college-aged students, working adults, and retired folks. It is never too early or too late to learn the cello.

My teaching style is adaptable based on each student’s individual needs, but always puts an emphasis on building a strong technical foundation, while also helping students discover their own joy and relationship with music and their instrument.

My lessons combine strong technical abilities while also fostering an ability to interpret and analyze music on their own. Music is also a deep, personal relationship with the student and their instrument, so we also learn how to seek out and learn about new music and recordings, and how to find live events in the area to attend.

For those taking cello lessons for the first time, my teaching materials include the Suzuki Cello Books, the Klengel Technical Studies, the Schroeder Foundational Studies, and any other music the student is interested in learning. For advanced students, we will assess what the student has already been working on, and add repertoire and technical studies as needed.
